On the dynamics of energy-growth nexus: Evidence from a world divided into four regions
This paper provides a comparative analysis of the energy-growth nexus in different world regions by using an identical methodology for each one, thereby avoiding the usual problem of results varying due to the use of differing methodologies. To access data covering the entire world, four regions were used: (i) America (North and South); (ii) Europe and Central Asia; (iii) Asia Pacific; and (iv) Africa and the Middle East. Annual aggregated time series from 1968 to 2013, and an auto-regressive distributed lag approach were used. The results suggest that, in the long-run: (a) The “feedback hypothesis” is present in America and Asia Pacific; (b) the “conservation hypothesis” was found in Europe and Central Asia and in Africa and the Middle East. Moreover, the results suggest that historical events, such as the oil shocks of 1970 and 1980 and the 2008 financial crisis, have heterogenous impacts across the world.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Augmented energy-growth nexus: economic, political and social globalization impacts
The augmented energy-growth nexus with globalization is analyzed for a panel of 43 countries between 1971 to 2013, by using na autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach. The impacts of economic, political and social globalization on energy-growth nexus are explored. The results are consistent with the presence of cointegration. Evidences of the traditional feedback hypothesis on the energy-growth nexus was found. Economic, political and social globalization have heterogenous impacts on the nexus. In general, globalization is a long-run driver of both energy consumption and economic growth. Accordingly, globalization should be promoted. In addition, restrictive energy policies should be avoided or carefully designed to no hamper economic growth.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Advances in new Methodologies for Problem Solving and Information Technology enable a
fundamental redesign of health care processes based on the use and integration of data and/or
knowledge at all levels, in a healthcare environment. Indeed, new communication technologies
will support the transition from institution centric to patient-centric based applications, i.e., the
health care system is faced with a series of challenges, namely those concerning quality-ofinformation
and the cost-effectiveness of such processes. On the other hand, the health level
achieved in Portugal does not allow anymore the degradation of the quality of services provided
to citizens, to whom, constitutionally, is guaranteed the right to have health care treatments. It is
important to gather clinical governance with the economic management of health care services,
particularly to achieve the desired sustainability of the National Health Service (Serviço Nacional
de Saúde).
The distribution of cost-effective health care allowing the patient to take active part in the caring
process, provision of evidence based care on all levels in the system and effective use and reuse
of information are key issues for the health care organization.
Our main aim will be the finding of ways and methods to overpass the actual scattering of
information through the services, departments and health sectors, where personal motivation is
difficult to attain, and the health care treatments are becoming disparate, at all levels.
It should be guaranteed, to the citizens, mainly the sick or the needy, providing timely health care
concerning the real needs of people through practices recognized as the best, from the clinical
point of view. To promote such goal it is important to integrate procedures and to control results. The use of IT’s should be maximized through the application of interoperability procedures,
creating truly integrated information services, considering the needs and interests of the health
care stakeholders.
The information and communication technology infrastructure should, therefore, reflect the view
of the health care system as a seamless system where information can flow across organizational
and professional borders. Thus, the work presented in this thesis, it will be address key principles
that must be at the center of patient-centered use of technologies for the health care and disease
management and prevention.
A global vision of hospital assistance will be gathered, integrated with other sectors an know-how,
providing citizens with adequate health care services, supported by information integration and
automation procedures acceptable and secure, respecting clinical ontologies and the best
medical practices, insuring the needed proximity to citizens, allowing, at the limit, to monitor ant
to give care to patients at home
On the Public Policies Supporting Renewables and Wind Power Overcapacity: Insights into the European Way Forward
The debate about the depth and characteristics of public policy intervention in encouraging
renewable energy is more urgent than ever. Some of the literature has started to cast doubt
on the strategies being pursued by countries to encourage renewables. These criticisms have
been varied with regard to the costs of intervention and the consequences for the economy
as a whole. [...]info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Morphological and ecological differences between two endemic species of Asianidia Zachvatkin (A. insulana and A. madeirensis) from Madeira: species boundaries and conservation status: (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)
A. insulana (Lindberg, 1961) and A. madeirensis (China, 1938) are two endemic and closely related species of the Asianidia perspicillata complex present in Madeira. They are relatively easy to distinguish on the basis of the aedeagus shape, body size and colour pattern, yet nymph morphology, distribution, plant associations and habitats were poorly known. The present study is a general overview of the morphology and ecology of this pair of species. New information on intra- and inter-specific variation, together with new distributional and ecological data are presented as a result of a thorough field-work from sea level up to the mountains and involving all main vegetation zones in the island. Moreover, their eventual origin through adaptive radiation by host-plant shift together with some conservation considerations are discussed
Evaluating the Impact of New Renewable Energy on the Peak Load - An ARDL Approach for Portugal
The integration of intermittent renewable energy will lead to demand surplus, whenever the need for generation from combined-cycle plants increases. This paper focuses on Portugal, a country in which wind power is largely integrated, and which has recently made major investments in solar power. The results show that coal energy management does not contribute to smoothing out the intermittency problems of intermittent renewable energy. The results further demonstrate that the inclusion of intermittent renewable energy in the electricity system leads to a huge need for combined-cycle generation. Thus, this suggests that a differentiated price policy will only be effective if, instead of consumption, the focus is on net load.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
